MALE BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY

male-bannerGynaecomastia or ‘Male Breast’ is the presence of glands in male chest area (in women such glands produce milk for breast feeding of baby after pregnancy). In the chest area some resistant fat may also get deposited giving the appearance of a female like breast.

Male Breast results from an imbalance between androgen (male hormone) and oestrogen (female hormone) activity. The hormonal imbalance that results in the deposition of glands in the chest areas is usually temporary and commonly occurs in boys at the time of puberty (14 yrs – 18yrs). Once the glands are laid down in the chest area, they do not regress. Male Breast does not develop due to obesity (becoming fat). That is why it cannot be treated by diet control or exercise. Also, since it is usually not due to any disease process, there are no medicines that can be given to treat this condition. Surgery is the only treatment.

What are the causes of Gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) ?

Physiologic Gynecomastia is seen in newborn infants, pubescent adolescents, and elderly individuals. The other causes may include obesity, aging, chronic liver disease. It can be the side effect of some medications such as gonadotropins, clomiphene, phenytoin, and exogenous testosterone – drugs that enhance estrogen synthesis or drugs that inhibit production or action of testosterone such as ketoconazole, metronidazole, alkylating agents, cisplatin, spironolactone, cimetidine, flutamide, finasteride, and etomidate Gynecomastia can also be due to genetic causes. Klinefelter’s Syndrome is one such genetic disorder characterized by abnormal enlargement of one or both breasts in men; hard tiny testicles that never grow, infertility, incomplete masculine body build, height, (6 ft. or more), may not be particularly athletic or co-ordinated.

The procedure is done under general anesthesia and is similar to breast reduction in females. The procedure usually takes about two hours and the patient is discharged from the hospital the same day or an overnight stay is required at the hospital. The type of procedure used depends on the degree of breast enlargement. The options include removal of the tissue under the breast, or liposuction of the chest wall. In both instances, a small elliptical incision is made on the lower half of the nipple area (areola). For those men with tissue that is more glandular in nature, all breast tissue directly under the nipple is removed.

If the tissue is more fatty in nature, liposuction can provide excellent results. In some people, ultrasonic assisted liposuction is an excellent approach.

Improved Results in India

Traditional method of treating male breast entailed making a big cut below the nipple area and cutting off the breast tissue only. Although this would improve appearance, results would fall short of an aesthetic ideal.

Often, there would be an area of shallowness surrounded by fat deposits (saucer deformity).

This can be corrected surgically, but it is better to avoid such a problem by selecting a more sensible option. Liposuction not only removes the breast tissue, it can remove the excess fat deposits on the chest at the same time and achieve a normal desirable contour.
