There are two types of Appendectomy surgery procedures in India performed to remove the appendix. The type of procedure that should be performed by the doctor depends on the severity of the appendicitis and the medical history of the patient. The two types are:

Open Appendectomy – Traditional Procedure

  • Procedure: In this open procedure, the surgeon makes an incision about 2-4 inches long in the lower right side of the abdomen. When the incision made, the abdominal area opens up and the appendix will be tied up with stitches and removed.
    • When Used: This open Appendectomy is used when the appendix has already burst or ruptured, causing peritonitis. It is also be used by surgeons when the patient has already had previous abdomen surgery.
    • Advantages: This type of Appendectomy procedure is useful when the surgeons needs better visibility of the abdominal cavity for complex cases or emergency cases.
  • Recovery: The patient needs to stay in the hospital for a few days and usually takes about 4-6 weeks to recover.

2. Laparoscopy Appendectomy Procedure

  • Procedure: In this procedure, the surgeon makes 1 to 3 tiny cuts, and then a thin tube called cannula is used to inflate the abdomen with the gas to see the abdomen cavity clearly.

A laparoscope device(a thin tube with bright light and camera) is used to insert through the cuts and the appendix will be tied up with stitches and remove.

If there is Peritonitis, then the surgeon will clean up the abdomen region and drain the pus out with salt water.

    • When Used: Laparoscopy appendectomy is used when the case is not very complicated. It is also done when the surgeon is experienced in it.
    • Advantages: Less pain after surgery, small scars, and a very fast recovery. The stitches will be removed within 10-15 days.
  • Recovery: Patients can get discharged within 24 hours of time after the surgery, small cuts heal fast and leave minimal scars.
