Arthroscopy Treatment and Cost in India: Minimally Invasive Joint Surgery by Expert Orthopedic Surgeons

Arthroscopy is surgical procedure, which is used to diagnose and treat problems within the joint.

A small fiberoptic arthroscope is inserted into a joint through a small incision (surgical cut) in the skin. The fiberoptic arthroscope is approximately 5 mm in diameter consists of a small camera mounted at the tip of a narrow tube with a light source.

The arthroscopic procedure can be viewed on a monitor by the operating team. The patient is put into local or general anesthesia.

The arthroscopic surgery can help to identify the damaged tissue present in the bones. The most common type of arthroscopic surgery include removal of loose debris, trimming of damaged cartilage, removal or repair of a torn meniscus, and ligament reconstruction.

  • To identify the location of the loose bodies and the spurs

How is arthroscopy performed ?

Arthroscopy is most often performed as an outpatient procedure. The patient will check into the facility where the procedure is being performed and an intravenous line (IV) established in order to administer fluids and medication. The type of anesthesia used varies depending on the joint being examined and the medical health of the patient. Arthroscopy can be performed under a general anesthetic, a spinal or epidural anesthetic, a regional block (where only the extremity being examined is numbed), or even a local anesthetic.

After adequate anesthesia is achieved, the procedure can begin. An incision is made on the side of the joint to be examined and the arthroscope is inserted into the incision. Other instruments are sometimes placed in another incision to help maneuver certain structures into the view of the arthroscope. In arthroscopic surgery, additional instruments for surgical repairs are inserted into the joint through the arthroscope. These instruments can be used to cut, remove, and sew damaged tissues. Once the procedure is completed, the arthroscope in removed and the incisions are sutured (sewn) closed. A sterile dressing is placed over the incision and a brace or ACE wrap may be placed around the joint.

Is Arthroscopic Surgery Safe ?

Understand that arthroscopic surgery is a surgical procedure and involves risks. These may include infection, blood clots, problems with anesthesia, etc. These are serious risks and the decision to undergo arthroscopic surgery should be taken seriously. That said, arthroscopic surgery is a “less invasive” procedure, and when performed for the right indications (meaning the right problems) it is often very successful. Ask your doctor for more information about arthroscopic surgery, and talk about the possible risks of undergoing the procedure.
