Risks of a Hip Replacement

Hip replacement surgery is usually very successful, but the success of the procedure is partly due to the rehabilitation period that follows the surgery. For patients to expect a good result from hip replacement surgery, they must be an active rehab participant.

Rehabilitation after hip replacement begins immediately. Patients will work with a physical therapist as soon as the surgical procedure has been performed. The emphasis in the early stages of rehab is to maintain motion of the hip replacement and to ensure that the patient can walk safely.

There are many different shapes, sizes, and designs of artificial components of the hip joint. For the most part these are composed of chrome, cobalt, titanium, or ceramic materials. Some surgeons are also using custom-made components to improve the fit in the femur.

The head of the femur or “ball” of the hip joint articulates or moves within the cup-like “socket” called the acetabulum of the pelvic bone. Together, these structures are referred to as a “ball and socket” joint. The femoral head and acetabulum are covered by a specialized surface called articular cartilage. This allows smooth and painless motion of the hip joint.

Several strong ligaments help hold the head of the femur within the acetabulum.

They are named according to their attachments : –

  • The iliofemoral ligament attaches the front of the ilium (pelvic bone) to the femur. It is fan-shaped, resembling an inverted Y and is sometimes referred to as the Y ligament of Bigalow.
  • The pubofemoral ligament attaches from an area on the front region of the pelvis called the pubis and connects to the femur.

New technology involving the implants for artificial hip replacement and advances in surgical techniques has improved the immediate and long-term outcome of the surgery. Generally today’s artificial hips can last a lifetime. However, if the person is very young, the plastic can wear out. Fortunately, with the new socket implants for the pelvis, the socket can be changed without removing the other portions of the hip joint.

The person with a hip replacement may be able to take part in physical activities that were impossible before surgery.
