VSD Surgery and cost india

VSD surgery in India refers to a ventricular septal defect which is a condition in which people are born with a hole in the wall between the two lower chambers of the heart. It’s one of the most common congenital heart defects. If we talk about small VSD then small VSD has minor and has few or no symptoms and it is easily curable compared to large VSD.

However, with large VSD, there may be larger holes that need to be repaired to avoid permanent damage and any other complications related to the heart. So if you are suffering from VSD concerns then choosing VSD surgery in India could be the best option for you as it is the best option to correct the hole in the chambers for patients who do not have fine hearts.

What exactly is VSD?

VSD which stands for ventricular septal defect is the surgical procedure to correct the holes in the heart. Our heart has four chambers. These chambers seal shut to efficiently pump the blood. So when there’s a VSD, a leak that disrupts the pumping ability of the heart.

In normal circumstances, Oxygen-poor blood from the body enters the right atrium. The blood flows into the right ventricle, which pumps it to the lungs. In the lungs, the blood picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. The oxygen-rich blood returns to the heart, entering the left atrium and the blood flows into the left ventricle, which pumps it out to the entire body. This process is crucial for delivering oxygen to all parts of the body.

So VSD is a problem. It’s because it can act as a connection between the two lower chambers of the heart (the left and right ventricle). Because the pressure in the left ventricle is high compared to the right ventricle. In the right ventricle, oxygen-rich blood mixes with oxygen-poor blood and it goes to the lungs. This results in extra blood that goes into the lungs and causes serious problems.

Different types of VSD

Usually, VSD comes in four types which are mentioned below:

Membranous: it’s one of the most common types of VSD and around 80% of cases of VSD come as a membranous. These VSDs are seen in the ventricle and upper section of the wall.

Muscular: around 20% of VSD cases come in Muscular. In this case, there is more than one hole.

Inlet: this case is shown when there is a hole that occurs just below the tricuspid valve in the right ventricle and in the left ventricle of the mitral valve.

Outlet: this type of VSD creates a hole in the right ventricle just before the pulmonary valve and in the left ventricle just before the aortic valve. It means connecting the two chambers.

How does this condition affect the body?

In most cases, VSD does not cause any symptoms. It’s because the hole is not large enough to create problems. But, if the case occurs where there is a hole which is large enough or if there are multiple holes, it can cause issues with blood leaking between the two chambers instead of circulating blood through the heart in the correct order.

The blood leaking makes your heart pumping effortless. However, if the leak is smaller, then it may not create any issues or symptoms. When the leak is larger, your heart needs then your heart needs to pump harder to compensate for the reduced blood flow. If the heart pumps harder like that for longer terms, it can cause issues in the heart and lungs.

What are the symptoms and causes of VSD?

The symptoms that can be seen in infants facing moderate to large VSDs may look like heart failure. The symptoms include the following:

  • Shortness of breath can involve fast breathing or a struggle to breathe.
  • Failure to slow weight gain.
  • An infant with frequent respiratory injections.
  • Sweating or fatigue during feeding.

VSD in other children and adults can cause the following issues:

  • While exercising feeling tired or out of breath.
  • Higher risk of heart inflammation due to injections.
  • A condition called cyanosis can happen when Eisenmenger syndrome develops, you can see this syndrome in the form of pale skin or a bluish tinge to skin and lips.

How is it treated and what kind of medication is used?

The majority of VSDs are small and it has no symptoms. Hence, creates no issue for the individuals and the small VSDs are likely to close on their own at the age of 6 years. So in these cases, a healthcare provider will advise you to not get surgery. They are against surgery in this condition. However, the healthcare provider will advise you to monitor for symptoms and see if the VSD defect closes on its own or not. If the VSD sizes are moderate or large then your doctor will recommend you repair the VSD by closing the hole that occurs in the chamber.

VSD surgery procedure

There are two ways to repair VSD in India that are mentioned below:

Surgery: the best way of closing the hole in the heart chamber is to go for surgery. The heart surgeon who is also known as the cardiac surgeon will operate the surgery and close the hole. The simplicity and complexity of the surgery is based on the size and location of the hole.

Transcatheter procedure: this procedure depends on a catheter-based approach to access the heart. When the catheter reaches to defect, place the device called an occluder and block the hole. These devices are made up of a mesh framework covered in a synthetic material.

The procedure of VSD surgery in India includes the following steps:

Anaesthesia: The patient is administered general anaesthesia to ensure they remain unconscious throughout the procedure. Anaesthesia helps patients and doctors with ease of operation.

Incision: A long incision is made in the chest, and the breastbone is separated to access the heart.

Heart-Lung Machine: The patient is connected to a heart-lung machine, which temporarily takes over the heart’s function.

Hole or patch Closure: A special patch is used to close the hole in the septum.

Breastbone repair: the heart surgeon will reassemble the breast bone with the help of wires.

Skin closure: the heart surgeon closes the skin or muscle incision and covers it with the help of a bandage.

Recovery of VSD surgery: The patient is taken to the recovery room for post-operative care.

Surgical closure of VSDs did not become a widespread procedure until the 1960s, so long-term data on outcomes and life expectancy is only now being collected and analyzed. Available data indicate that adults with closed VSDs and without other heart or lung complications can expect to live a normal lifespan. In the 40 years that the operation has been widely used, about 6 percent of patients have required a re-operation to close small leaks that developed around the patch. Are there any long-term problems or complications after surgery?

Within the first six months after surgical repair of a VSD, the person still has a risk of endocarditis while the heart heals. Your cardiologist can advise you on how to protect yourself from this life-threatening condition.

People with repaired VSDs may develop cardiac arrhythmias later in life, caused by scar tissue that develops ion the heart from the VSD surgery. Several effective treatments are available for arrhythmias; your cardiologist can advise whether your arrhythmia requires treatment. The risk of arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death is higher in patients who have undergone VSD repair late in life.
